Dermatitis or Eczema

← All Conditions

Dermatitis and eczema, along with several other skin conditions, are rated under one shared formula based on either how much of your body is affected, or how much systemic (not topical-only) treatment you require, whichever produces the higher rating.

Common Filing Mistake

"Systemic therapy" specifically means treatment by a route other than skin (oral, injection, suppository, intranasal), a topical cream alone doesn't count toward the therapy-based criteria, even a strong one. However, if a topical treatment covers a large body area, you can still qualify under the body-area criteria instead, document both the percentage of body affected AND your actual treatment regimen.

Special Rules
  • This is a shared "General Rating Formula for the Skin" also used for several other diagnostic codes (discoid lupus erythematosus, dermatophytosis, psoriasis, and others), the specific diagnosis differs but the rating mechanics are the same.
  • Photograph visibly affected areas at your worst flare-ups and keep a treatment log, both are useful evidence given how much this rating depends on extent and treatment history over a full 12-month period, not a single exam day.
Sourced from 38 CFR §§ 4.71a / 4.130. This is a reference aid, not a rating decision, your actual rating depends on the medical evidence in your specific case and your C&P exam findings. Rules can be amended, verify current text at eCFR.gov or with an accredited VSO before relying on this for a specific claim.
